About Madrigal:
Madrigal is a biopharmaceutical company pursuing novel therapeutics for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), also known as metabolic dysfunction associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Our first therapy, Rezdiffra (resmetirom), was granted accelerated approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of adults with NASH with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis (consistent with stages F2 to F3 fibrosis) and is being studied in a Phase 3 trial for the treatment of NASH with compensated cirrhosis.

Role Overview: 
The VP, Head of Scientific Communication (VP, SC) is responsible for overseeing multiple Scientific Communication capabilities within Madrigal, including: 1) Medical Information 2) Scientific content creation 3) Field Medical Team Scientific Training 4) Omnichannel Communication 5) Publications and 6) Medical and Promotional Review of Materials. The VP, SC is responsible for the execution of all tactics in support of these activities, which is driven by the Integrated Communication Plan (ICP) that incorporates a plan for globalization of content. The individual will ensure the successful implementation of assigned programs/projects.

The VP, SC will develop and maintain a global Scientific Communication capability, including appropriate staff, contractors and vendors, to fully execute the strategy and related activities/tactics. This individual will be responsible for the hiring, onboarding, development, leadership and management of the Global Scientific Communication team to execute the long-term strategy of Madrigal.

The VP, SC is in collaboration with department leadership, is responsible for the development of high-quality impactful Scientific Communication material for both internal (e.g., Field) and external (e.g., HCPs) stakeholders that communicates the impact of resmetirom’s value proposition.

Overarching Responsibilities: 
  • Responsible for Scientific Communication annual budget and ensuring Scientific Communication investments are planned to meet strategic goals.
  • Lead the Scientific Communication function, including the development of global Medical Information, Scientific Content Creation, Field Medical Team Scientific Training, Omnichannel Communication, Publications and Medical and Promotional Review all driven by the Integrated Communication Plan. Ensure that teams provide input to brand and medical plans, scientific platforms, and publication strategies to support brand value propositions. Lead the planning and execution of related projects and provide subject matter expertise that supports the communication of resmetirom's clinical, economic, and patient-centered positions and value propositions in the US and ex-US.
  • Engage and collaborate with the Scientific Communication team globally to ensure the development, implementation and effective communication of therapeutic area and product-specific Scientific Communication tools and materials for use by field-based teams.
  • Ensure the Scientific Communication team actively participates in and collaborates with matrix teams (e.g., Brand Teams, Legal, Regulatory, etc.) to ensure strategically aligned input/support for internal decision-making during the development and commercialization process.
  • Recruit, train, direct, develop and motivate Scientific Communication team at all levels. Collaborate with Scientific Communication leadership team in the development, implementation and management of processes and high-quality training programs for optimization of scientific exchange.
  • Oversees Scientific Communication team in development and maintenance of all customer-facing materials and tools, resources, and training for disease state/burden of illness, clinical product information, value propositions, quality strategies, disease management, etc., and in management of external agencies.
  • Manages the team to ensure all promotional and medical materials comply with regulatory standards, company policies, and ethical guidelines and ensures proper utilization of the escalation process.
Responsibilities by Function: 
Medical Information:
  • Provide strategic direction for medical information functions, ensuring alignment with Madrigal’s goals.
  • Ensure that all medical information stakeholders adhere to relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Oversee the collection, analysis, and dissemination of medical data and information to support clinical decision-making and patient safety.
  • Engage with appropriate cross-functional teams, including clinical research, regulatory affairs, and brand, to provide accurate medical information.
Scientific Content Creation:
  • Oversee development of scientific materials and resources for use in scientific exchange.  
Field Medical Team Scientific Training:
  • Oversee development of scientific content for the field medical teams to ensure the field team is well-equipped with required scientific knowledge.
  • Oversee the delivery of scientific training programs, ensuring they are engaging, relevant, and accessible to all team members.
  • Measure the effectiveness of training initiatives through metrics and feedback and ensure that updates are pulled through to scientific training materials.
Omnichannel Communication:
  • Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive and overarching omnichannel communication strategy that aligns with Madrigal’s objectives, regulatory requirements, and market dynamics.
  • Ensure the team delivers content that is consistent and cohesive across various channels, including digital, social media, and face-to-face interactions with HCPs and other stakeholders.
  • Guide the team to navigate the complex regulatory landscape.
Publications:
  • Oversee development of publication strategies aligned with Madrigal’s goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with clinical, regulatory, and marketing teams to gather data and ensure timely delivery of content.
Promotional and Medical Review:
  • Ensure all promotional and medical materials comply with regulatory standards, company policies, and ethical guidelines.
  • Oversees cross-functional collaboration to review and approve content, ensuring scientific accuracy and alignment with brand strategy while mitigating risk.
Qualifications and Skills Required:
  • Doctoral degree or equivalent from an accredited institution in a clinical discipline (Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing etc.)
  • A minimum of ten (10) years Medical Communication/Scientific Communication experience
  • A minimum of 5 years leading a global Medical Communication/Scientific Communication team
  • A minimum of 5 years of people leadership in medical affairs, including hiring, onboarding, performance review and development of colleagues.
  • Deep knowledge of US and Ex-US Scientific Communication trends and landscape.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, lead and execute strategy at a global level.
  • Deep functional expertise in Scientific Communication as well as leadership
  • Ability to interact and strategize with key leadership and stakeholders across the business
  • Follow and comply with all compliance laws and regulations
  • Preferred: Knowledge of liver disease and chronic metabolic disease.
Travel (approximately 30%):
  • Willingness to travel to conferences, various corporate locations, and stakeholder meetings, including overnight trips.
  • Some international travel may be required.
  • Requires up to 30% travel.
Work Location Specifics:
  • Work Location: Headquarters – West Conshohocken, PA (primary); Headquarters – Waltham, MA (secondary).
Compensation:
Base salary is determined by several factors that include, but are not limited to, a successful candidate's qualifications, skills, education, experience, business needs, and market demands. The role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, and comprehensive benefits, which include flexible paid time off (PTO), medical, dental, vision, and life and disability insurance.
